How Much Social Media is
Enough For Your Business
With the explosion of social media, how much social media is enough to get your business the attention it needs on the internet without taking away too much time and resources from your normal business efforts? The answer depends on several factors.
What is Your Niche?
Some niches are naturally more social than others. For example, it will be harder to get people to pass your link to friends about the latest hemorrhoid medication than it would be to get them to share information about the latest ice cream flavor. That just makes sense.
If you are in a business niche that can easily use social business marketing, use it! If not, you can still try to use it, but you just have to work a little harder and be much more creative.
Know Where Your Customers Are
If your target audience hangs out on Facebook, then creating a buzz about your business there is a good idea. If they are using Linked-In, Pinterest or Twitter, find them there.
Each social network has users that generally fit certain specific demographics. Do a little research to see which ones match the people you want to reach with your business marketing. That is a good start point for any marketing campaign.
How Many Social Indicators Do You Need?
Recently, Google has changed search. It is no longer valuing authoritative links to a business site as much as in the past. Instead, the number of likes, pins, retweets, etc… are the social indicators that they are using more to determine how your site does in the blog results. In other words, the more people who are “talking” about you...the better your results may be in the search results.
Yikes! This is a Full-Time Job!
However that doesn’t mean that every business needs to hire a full-time staff or social media manager to manage their online social networks. Like any other marketing effort, you just have to be better at it than your competition.
If you are a local plumber and you are the only one who posts to Facebook or Twitter with coupons for your service and a once-a-week tip...you are probably WAY ahead of your competition.
On the other hand, if your direct competitors are already using a lot of social media with great success, you will need to invest some serious time (and possibly money) to keep up or lose out.
Quality Over Quantity
When determining how much social media is enough for your business, it is important to keep in mind that quantity is not as important as quality. If you only have the time and resources to really brand your business on one social network, then do that. If you can only post one high-quality tip or how-to video once a week, then do it and do it well.
A good quality effort will be more helpful than spamming your potential customers with less-than helpful information.
Where to Start?
Reserve some marketing time to do some research. Then experiment. See what works and what doesn’t for YOUR business. You will be glad that you did.
