Twitter as a Small Business Marketing Tool

Try using Twitter as a small business marketing tool if you want to experience the success of business social networking.

Twitter can be a lot of fun for teenagers that want instant gratification chatting with friends. It has proven incredibly convenient for celebrities who want to connect with their fans so they remain celebrities. Then there is the small business owner. What can Twitter possibly do for you?

Twitter Marketing

It turns out Twitter is now being used quite successfully by small businesses for marketing. It has also proved quite invaluable for larger businesses to build their brands and reach a steeper share of their market on a daily basis.

Using Twitter to Market Your Business

The following five steps will show you the process of using Twitter to market your small business:

  • Step One: You sign up for Twitter and start connecting with people or companies you already know.

This is the fastest and easiest step. You simply sign up for your free Twitter account and set up a profile that represents your business and your brand. You then find everyone that you already know, professionally and personally, who is already using Twitter. These people that you already know are the basis for your Twitter network.

  • Step Two: You start interacting with those people you already know and contributing your own tweets of value.

Start following those people/businesses who you already know and actively communicate with them. Make sure everything you say on Twitter is professional and represents you in a positive light. Be completely genuine and helpful and your knowledge and passion for your niche will shine.

Start posting your own tweets as well; making sure everything is very useful and entertaining to the people you have already connected with and those that you would like to attract. Don't post a bunch of tweets trying to sell something. Don't over-market yourself. Just be helpful, genuine, and of course a bit of humor and personality never hurts.

  • Step Three: People connected to those people you already know discover you and become new people that you now know.

Those valuable, entertaining tweets get passed around and people connected to those people you already know seek you out. You now have a growing audience to enjoy your tweets. You are meeting new people and some will be very valuable to you while others are just followers that may amount to something in the future.

  • Step Four: Keep an eye open for more people to follow and more tweets to pass on the your followers.

Search by keywords and terms that are related to your niche and follow others who are interested in the same things. Then pass along great tweets from them and they will probably do the same for you.

  • Step Five: Your tweet reputation grows and word of mouth brings even more people that you will come to know.

Hopefully, word of mouth travels and you become known to more and more people. Of course, the more people you seek out and connect with, the more that will also come to connect with you.

With time you get traffic as people you now know want to get to know you even more.

Eventually, those you connect with through Twitter will start checking out your website, blog and other offerings. They see you as a valuable member of your niche or a reputable source for information or products and they want to know more about you. This is when your Twitter connections really start to pay off.

What About the Competition?

You can also use twitter to check out your competition or even follow them to see what they are up to. This gives you an insider look so you can find ways to one-up them with your own online business. (You may be able to find ways work together on projects too!)

Just remember that they may be following you as well, especially as you become more successful and get on their radar.
